    Description

A beautifully modernised four-bedroom former post office, combining character with contemporary living. Three bedrooms benefit from en-suites, while the landscaped garden features a dedicated hot tub area and versatile garden room/office. A truly individual Letchworth home.

A truly individual and beautifully modernised former post office, The Old Corner Post Office is an impressive four-bedroom home combining a rich history with contemporary family living. Occupying a prominent corner position on Baldock Road, this distinctive property offers generous and versatile accommodation, including the rare benefit of three en-suite bedrooms.

Built in around 1850 some 55 years before Letchworth Garden City itself was conceived the property began life as a coaching inn, offering food and rest to travellers making the journey north or south to London by horse and carriage. The house was extended in the 1920s with the addition of a kitchen, store room, office, provisions and coal store, and again in the 1970s with a further garden room.

In the 1950s the building became the local post office, serving the community for decades until its closure in 2018. Generations of locals remember it fondly not just for its post office services, but for its groceries, sweets and celebrated bacon and sausage rolls, a particular favourite among pupils from nearby St Christopher School. To this day, passers-by often stop for a chat with the current owners when they’re out in the front garden a lovely reminder of the building’s community roots. The original post box remains on the grounds, along with a remembrance plaque, as charming nods to its past.

In 2022 the current owners undertook a complete redesign of the house and gardens, sensitively blending the property’s historic character with high-specification modern living all designs, including the double-glazed windows and doors, were approved by the Heritage Foundation and had to precisely match the original leaded Georgian-style windows in size, opening style and design. A single original window from 1850 has been retained internally as a feature.

The first floor’s three small bedrooms and single bathroom were reconfigured into two generously sized en-suite bedrooms, while the former ground-floor shop was converted into a third en-suite bedroom. All bedrooms have been finished to a similar high standard, each with networked smart TVs, data points, WiFi and built-in bedside lighting. The en-suites feature split carpet and tiled flooring, illuminated mirrors, anti-slip showers with Bluetooth app-controlled units, heated towel rails and extract fans.

The ground floor also offers a fourth bedroom/office with full power, data and WiFi (as found throughout the house), plus a further stylish bathroom with a freestanding bath, app-controlled speakers, illuminated mirror, heated towel rail and extract fan. Importantly, the ground floor has been designed as single-level living throughout ideal for visiting relatives who may find stairs difficult.

Further additions include a sizeable kitchen diner, orangery, utility room, server room with half-height rack, and a new entrance porch. All cabling is hidden within newly insulated walls throughout.

The garden has been just as thoughtfully redesigned, enclosed by secure 8ft fencing with an underground soak-away. Three new lawns and full-length garden beds are connected by a curved pathway linking modern patios at either end, with mains-fed lighting illuminating key trees, features and both the house and summer house.

A separate summer house provides fantastic additional space: half fitted as a kitchen/office, and half with room to house a large 3-metre square jacuzzi both areas equipped with smart TVs, WiFi, data and satellite TV, matching the specification of the main house.

Outside, the property further benefits from two parking spaces, three digital CCTV cameras, and festive Christmas lighting.

The Old Corner Post Office also benefits from its convenient position within Letchworth Garden City, with a wide range of local amenities, shops, restaurants, schools and recreational facilities close by, along with excellent transport connections to surrounding areas and London.

Combining genuine history, individuality and exceptional modern comfort, The Old Corner Post Office is a rare and truly fun home to live in, inside and out. This is a property that needs to be viewed to be fully appreciated.
