THE HISTORY

Part of the original grounds of Tewin Water House, the house was built in 1689 and was the property of Squire John Fleet, the son of Sir John Fleet - a wealthy sugar merchant who became Lord Mayor of London in 1692 and was also Sheriff of London and MP for London. John married Elizabeth Malyn who would later become Lady Cathcart and thus began a fascinating period of the house's history which only ended upon the death of Lady Cathcart in 1789 at the age of 98. The property had already passed into the ownership of Lord Cowper 4 years previously. Following the death of Lady Cathcart, he demolished the original building and replaced it with the house we see today. It sits in grounds designed by Humphry Repton, the last great English landscape designer of the 18th century.

We purchased the house because of its fabulous location and the beautiful grounds. We love being able to walk miles into the local countryside from our front door. We have extended and improved the house and installed new bathrooms and a kitchen/dining room. This new room makes the garden part of the house and is wonderful for Summer parties.
