John married Elizabeth Malyn who would later become Lady Cathcart and thus began a fascinating period of the house's history which only ended upon the death of Lady Cathcart in 1789 at the age of 98. The property had already passed into the ownership of Lord Cowper 4 years previously. Following the death of Lady Cathcart, he demolished the original building and replaced it with the house we see today. It sits in grounds designed by Humphry Repton, the last great English landscape designer of the 18th century.
