The Area

St Albans is a historic cathedral City in south Hertfordshire, approximately 21 miles north of central London.  Taking its modern name from St Alban, the first Christian martyr, who is believed to have been beheaded at the top of Holywell Hill.  It also became the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street and is now a sought after commuter town.

A busy City with many open parkland areas including Verulamium, Clarence Park home of St Albans FC and many more offering a wide range of leisure activities.  There is also the Old Albanian Rugby Football Club, a rugby union club which has a large facility to the north of the city centre and which hosts the training ground to Premiership club Saracens (however, Saracens play home matches in Watford).

St Albans enjoys a large and varied city centre with both individual independent shops and well know High Street stores, as well as a vibrant street market on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s throughout the year.  There is a large choice of pubs and restaurants including Ye Olde Fighting Cocks which is claimed to be one of the oldest public houses in Britain.

Trains run north to Luton and on to Bedford. From London, the trains continue south to Brighton via Gatwick, Sevenoaks or Wimbledon and Sutton. The rail link therefore gives direct access to London Luton Airport (one stop north) and London Gatwick Airport (approx 1hr 10 m on a limited stops train).  St Pancras International in turn connects directly through to Paris and Brussels.
There are also very good road links with the M1 accessible from junction 6 Redbourn and the M25 junctions 21 and 22.
