Hitchin Office
The Area
Welcome to the historic medieval market town of Hitchin, dating back over some 1000 years and originally built up around the River Hiz, it is a truly charming place to live with a population of about 30,000.
Hitchin has retained its market town feel and has many fine Tudor and Georgian buildings, particularly around the historic town centre together with the beautiful St Mary's Church.
Famous for it’s traditional open market which is the largest in the Home Counties and has been nominated for the Market of the Year Award 2010. It is open every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
Hitchin has many high quality boutiques and independent shops including some larger chain stores.
Famous for it’s vibrant social scene which accounts for the large numbers of pubs, cafés and some of the areas finest restaurants, it also has two theatres - The Queen Mother Theatre and The Market Theatre while cinemas and other attractions can be found in nearby towns.
During the summer, Hitchin is host to the Hitchin Festival which includes the Rhythms of the World concert which attracts over 20,000 visitors to our small town. Many of the acts at ROTW are from Hitchin or the surrounding towns which gives Hitchin a very active music scene.
Further tourist attractions include Hitchin Museum and Hitchin British Schools Museum.
Hitchin is surrounded by many popular smaller towns and villages including: Gosmore, Great Wymondley, Great Offley, Ickleford, Kimpton, Little Wymondley, Pirton, Preston, St Ippolyts, Shillington, Weston and Whitwell.
