The Area
Harpenden is an attractive, highly desirable town in south Hertfordshire, surrounded by open countryside but with easy access into nearby towns of
St Albans (5 miles south),
Luton (5 miles north), and
London Luton international airport. London lies approx 30 miles to the south and is easily approached on the
M1 motorway.
The arrival of the railway system radically changed Harpenden's surroundings. It grew from an agricultural village into a town. Although Harpenden now has almost 30,000 residents, it is still often referred to by locals as "Harpenden Village".
One very notable feature of Harpenden is its parks and commons. The central area of Harpenden is characterized by
Church Green, Leyton Green and the
High Street Greens. Over the past 100 years the town has become an affluent, attractive and desirable place to live with many listed buildings. The whole of the town centre is classified as a conservation area.
Just to the south of the town centre is Harpenden Common, stretching from the shops in the town centre for more than a mile, a total of 238 acres. Harpenden Common is home to the Cricket Club, a football club, bridle ways for horse riding, ramblers’ paths, and Harpenden Common Golf Club, all contained in an area of natural beauty which was awarded a national Green Flag Award in 2007.
The River Lea flows through the
Batford neighbourhood. The Nicky Line railway used to link
Harpenden,
Redbourn and
Hemel Hempstead. It has since been converted to a path forming part of the National Cycle Network and very popular with local runners.
Harpenden has many high quality shops, with three central supermarkets Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Sainsburys, and numerous designer clothes shops. A good proportion of the High Street shops are run by independent retailers. There is a superb and varied choice of restaurants and many pubs; both in central Harpenden and in its suburbs.
